Best of Ruffled DIY Contest

I've been keeping a close eye of Ruffled's DIY contest entries few weeks and to be honest, I haven't been that impressed. A number of the projects are just not that original and the rest of them aren't that creative. Unfortunately this is probably more a reflection of the time I've spent on wedding blogs and doing DIY research, than the quality of the submissions. Here are a few that I thought were actually useful/creative DIY projects.

1. Doily Paper Laterns

{DIY Instructions}

I actually saw these lanterns on Etsy at June Petals a few months ago. I even bookmarked the store! I am super excited about this DIY project because I already own way too many doilies!

2. Hot Chocolate & Marshmallow Favors

{DIY Instructions}

I am not having a winter wedding but I think this idea is really adorable. I think these would so adorable for a destination wedding at a ski lodge.

3. Thank You Garden Seed Package

{DIY Instructions}

Once again, I don't think these would be appropriate for my wedding but would be so adorable at a garden wedding. I generally like DIY projects that include printable templates.

Organic Almond Favors

For centuries, almonds were commonly distributed to wedding guests to signify well wishes on the bridegroom’s new life. In the thirteenth century, almonds coated with sugar, known as confetti, were introduced. Confetti soon transformed to sugared almonds, which later evolved into the wedding favor for modern day weddings. Traditionally, five Jordan almonds are presented in a confection box or wrapped in elegant fabric to represent fertility, longevity, wealth, health and happiness. The bitterness of the almond and the sweetness of the coated candy exemplify the bitter sweetness of a marriage.

These little favors were put together by the wonderful women whose kids I babysit. She runs an organic snack company out of her home called Sweet Harlem Pop (because she started with popcorn). These are little favors that she put together for a friends wedding in Arizona. She was nice enough to let me have one as a sample for my own wedding. Not only are they adorable but the maple almonds are super yummy.

She even includes a sweet little poem which reads:

Sweet Harlem Crunch Almonds for thee
Herein sugared almonds for each guest to eat
To remind us that life is both bitter and sweet
Five special wishes for the new husband and wife
Health, wealth, happiness, children and a long life!

DIY Sparkler Holders

It seems like no one is doing rice anymore. These days its all about eco-friendly alternatives such as flower petals, bubbles, and sparklers.

That being said, here's a great DIY idea:
